DEEP ROOTS IN THE CULTURE OF THE LOCAL AREA
Cantina Mori Colli Zugna has chosen to dedicate its line of wines "Le Selezioni" to one of the most daring historical events ever to occur in Trentino involving the Most Serene Republic of Venice against the House of Visconti of Milan.
The naval battle took place in 1439 in the waters of Lake Garda: 25 large galleys were transported through Mori to the so-called Terra di San Mauro, an event known as "Galeas per Montes". Cantina Mori Colli Zugna has been making wine for over 50 years, since one night in October 1955, when several far-sighted peasants from the local area, who were continuously harassed by the private individuals to whom they had to deliver their grapes, felt the need for a change… Hence, they established a wine-producing cooperative in the town of Mori. The initial phase of the winery was a difficult one, and its founding members were faced with the scepticism of many people but also with the courage of some, namely, the smaller peasants.
Despite this situation, two years later, thanks to the tenacity and determination of those peasants, Cantina Sociale di Mori was founded in 1957. Two years later, the peasants of the area of Serravalle followed the same path, which led to the establishment of the Cantina Sociale Colli Zugna in 1959. Later on in 1997, the two wineries merged into a single winery, Cantina Mori Colli Zugna. Initially, the winery, which had only a few partners, was small with few financial resources. After the 1960s, the winery developed significantly thanks to the strong cooperative spirit of its vine-growers. It currently has 680 partners.
This territory has greatly benefitted from this cooperative system, since everyone is given the opportunity, regardless of the size of the company, to cultivate small plots of land in marginal areas, thus contributing to the development and maintenance of the local area and preventing the migration of peasants towards the town and the bottom of the valley. The winery is located in the area of Vallagarina, where vines spread systematically at the end of the 19th century. Today, it continues its activities in the wake of this century-old history of vines and winemaking. All this led, in 2011, to the establishment of new premises at the Cantina Mori Colli Zugna, which combine the ancient production concepts of winemaking with cutting-edge technologies. A history of struggles and successes has enabled its partners to build the largest underground winery in Europe, a unique wine cellar for better wine.
